Hey RCS parents! This is an update from our first work day on Friday, 3/18. We had a great nights rest on Thursday night and everyone woke up ready to serve on Friday morning. After breakfast and a team meeting, we drove up the hill to the dorm. The kids started working right away- some were painting, some were drywalling, some were tiling, and some were installing baseboards. We worked from 11:30-5:00 with a quick break for lunch. Not only did the kids work hard, but they did quality work. Mattie Schibler and Jacob Martinez were pouring cement in the bathroom. Keith, who was heading up the construction project, walked in and just stared at their work. Mattie shared that they were a little nervous they did it wrong. Mattie asked, “how does it look?” Keith responded, “picture worthy!” and took out his phone to take a picture of their work.
After we finished working, we got ready to visit Window Rock. As we were sitting in the car waiting for one more vehicle to come down the hill, the kids in my car noticed an opportunity to serve. Across the street from us was a little old lady trying to wash the roof of her car. We immediately drove over and the kids jumped out the car and ran over to help her. They grabbed rags and started washing her car- all while introducing themselves and building a relationship with Miss June. It amazed me how eager and happy they were to serve.
We drove about 10 minutes to get to Window Rock, which is a national monument and is the biggest attraction in Window Rock, AZ. As we were staring up at the rock formation, I heard several kids uttering their amazement at what God had created. A couple of missionary kids from WIM tagged along, and the kids had a great time hanging out with them.
We wrapped up the day with dinner at a hamburger joint and a team meeting. At the end of each day, we all share our “pits and peaks” from the day. It’s such a sweet and honest time. Most of the “peaks’ included meeting missionaries (or for returners, seeing those missionaries again), getting to work alongside their teammates, or helping serve in other ways. I love that the happiest parts of their day were serving other people.
Here are some pictures from work day #1! I’ll try to give another update in a couple of days. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for entrusting your kids to us. It’s so encouraging to watch them serve with such joyful hearts.
